FAQ

Plain answers.

If a question is not here, ask us. We would rather answer it now than after launch.

The record

Does a record show that my coin is genuine?

No record states that. It shows which accredited laboratory examined the coin, when, and everything that has happened to the record since.

What does “provenance” mean here?

The record’s own registration history. It starts when a laboratory registers the coin and collects every attestation, transfer, flag and link from then on. Where the coin came from before that is not part of it.

Who is the holder of a record?

Whoever controls the account the record sits in: usually the passkey account the app creates at the claim, or a non-custodial or hardware wallet the holder moves the record to.

What does holding a record give me?

Control of the record: you can transfer it, raise or clear a stolen flag and add counter-notices.

The record is a registration history, not a claim on the metal against Gold ID, a laboratory or a dealer. It carries no right to delivery, redemption, yield or a vote.

Can anyone change a record?

No party in the registry can alter or delete a recorded event through the contracts. They have no administrator key, pause, burn or upgrade function.

Once a week, a Merkle root of the week’s events is anchored on Ethereum mainnet. Anyone can recompute it, so a change to the history, even one made by the chain’s own governance, becomes visible.

Checks and results

My coin was “not confirmed”. What does that mean?

This capture did not match the registered surface, so the terminal takes further captures.

If the result stands after further captures, the laboratory takes over the case and may examine the coin itself.

How exact is a check?

The terminal captures the coin under fixed light. The matching service compares the capture with the stored surface profile, and the laboratory signs the result.

Who can check a coin?

Anyone can read a record, free. To check the coin itself, a terminal sends a fresh capture to the laboratory that attests the record. The answer goes only to the person who asked and is not written to the chain.

When something goes wrong

What happens if my coin is stolen?

Raise a stolen flag. It is a public warning that every reader of the record sees, with its date, and it cancels any pending reissue at once. It does not stop a transfer.

Gold ID and the laboratories can neither raise, clear nor alter a flag. Only the current holder can clear one, and clearing waits 72 hours, or 30 days if the record has moved since the flag was first raised. Every raise and clearance stays in the public history.

I lost my receipt before scanning it.

A dealer can rescan the coin. If the issuing laboratory recognises it, it signs a replacement claim key that takes effect after 30 days. Until then the old receipt still works. Scanning the receipt at the counter avoids the problem.

I lost my phone.

A passkey synchronised through your phone’s platform account survives a lost phone. If the key is lost for good, the issuing laboratory can issue a replacement record with the coin present, after a 30-day wait, if the record carries no flag.

Practical

Which coins can be registered?

At launch, gold coins of 1 oz and ½ oz. Silver is outside the launch scope.

What personal data is stored?

The app collects no name, and no name, image or profile is written to the chain. Account addresses, flags and hashes are on the chain and are treated as personal data. Your biometric unlock never leaves your phone.

Does it cost anything?

Reading a record is free. The network fee of your first claim is paid for you. Other prices will be published before launch.

What does “accredited” mean?

Admitted to the registry under the accreditation standard its registrar adopts. It is not accreditation by a national accreditation body.

When does Gold ID launch?

Once its launch conditions are met, among them an independent audit of the contracts and recognition targets met on the production rig. Partner enquiries from dealers and laboratories are open now.
