Checking a coin
Check a coin against its record.
A terminal captures the coin again, and the laboratory behind its record compares the fresh capture with the registered surface. The answer comes back in plain words, with a clear next step.
One comparison
How a check runs.
Name the record
A check is one-to-one: someone presents a coin together with the record it should match.
Capture again
A terminal photographs the coin again and sends the fresh capture to the laboratory that attests the record.
Compare
The matching service compares the capture with the stored surface profile. The laboratory signs the result.
Answer
The result goes to the person who asked. It is not written to the chain.
The three results
Three answers, each with a next step.
These are the words the terminal screen shows. Each answer says plainly what the comparison found and what happens next.
Confirmed
On screenMatches the registered surface.
- What it means
- A fresh capture of the coin matches the surface registered for this record.
- What happens next
- Read the record’s history: which laboratory examined the coin, when, and everything since.
Not confirmed
On screenNot confirmed.
- What it means
- This capture did not match the registered surface.
- What happens next
- The terminal takes further captures. If the result stands, the case is referred to the laboratory.
Inconclusive
On screenCapture not usable. Try again.
- What it means
- The capture failed a quality check: framing, exposure, a foreign object or too little surface.
- What happens next
- The coin is repositioned and captured again.
After a not-confirmed result
The laboratory takes over.
The terminal first takes further captures. If the result stands, the screen reads:
Not confirmed. Your case has been referred to the laboratory.
The case is handled off the chain and concerns the named record, not its holder: anyone can name a public record. The laboratory can examine the coin itself, then closes the case in one of four ways.
Re-attest
On its own examination, the laboratory accepts the coin as the registered one and adds a new attestation.
Withdraw
The laboratory withdraws its attestation. The record then reads “no laboratory currently attests this coin”.
Register anew
The laboratory examines the coin physically and registers it as a new coin. The new record links to the earlier one with the note “registered without a matching earlier record”.
Close without change
The laboratory finds that nothing should change, for example because the coin presented is not the registered one.
